Study in the Western Cape

Studying in the Western Cape gives you access to four public Universities, one of which is also a dedicated University of Technology — a strong mix of academic and career-focused routes based in the province.

Six public TVET Colleges operate across the Western Cape, offering NC(V) and Report 191 qualifications from Grade 9

or 10 level, and the province runs its own public Nursing College for SANC-registered nurse training.

The Western Cape has the second-largest number of DHET-registered Private Colleges in the country, giving learners a genuinely wide range of private-sector business, IT and occupational qualifications to choose from, alongside legal Home Schooling registration under the same national rules as the rest of South Africa.

Cape Town houses Parliament and serves as the country's legislative capital, and the province's economy runs on tourism, a globally recognised wine industry, a substantial agricultural export sector and a growing engineering and logistics cluster around Saldanha Bay — a genuinely broad mix of industries for students to train towards, whatever direction they're headed in.

If you're relocating to the Western Cape specifically to study, budget realistically for a higher cost of living than most other provinces, particularly in and around Cape Town — one of the trade-offs of studying somewhere this popular. Funding through NSFAS works the same way regardless of province, so it doesn't affect this decision either way.
