Short Course & Specialist Providers in the Western Cape
Short courses in the Western Cape are well served, with several well-known providers based here. GetSmarter was founded in Cape Town and delivers online short courses with partner universities, including the University of Cape Town. The Wine Centre, in Meadowridge, Cape Town, has been a WSET Approved Programme Provider since
2011, and Waterfall School of Business has a student support office in Stellenbosch and offers short learning programmes through distance learning.
Wine is a real strength here. The Cape Winelands are home to a cluster of wine schools and university wine departments, so if you want to work in wine, tourism or hospitality, you are studying close to the industry. Many other specialist fields, from business to creative skills, are also covered by providers on this page.
Before you pay, check who accredits the course. Some courses are awarded by an international body such as the Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET), some by a university, and some are certificates of completion only. If a provider claims a SAQA-registered or QCTO-approved qualification, ask for the registration details and check them yourself. Providers that offer qualifications as private colleges should be on the current DHET register, and 55 DHET-registered private institutions are listed with the Western Cape as their head-office province.
The Western Cape has a high cost of living compared with most provinces, so compare prices and payment plans. NSFAS does not fund private providers. If you live outside Cape Town, online courses let you study without moving, but check data needs first.
