Studying in Gauteng puts you at the centre of South Africa's largest concentration of higher-education options: seven public Universities, two of which are also dedicated Universities of Technology, cover everything from traditional academic degrees to career-focused, workplace-linked diplomas.
Eight public TVET Colleges operate
across the province, offering NC(V) and Report 191 qualifications from Grade 9 or 10 level, and Gauteng has its own public Nursing College for SANC-registered nurse training funded by the provincial health department.
By far the largest number of DHET-registered Private Colleges in the country are based here, giving learners the widest possible range of private-sector business, IT and occupational qualifications to choose from, alongside legal Home Schooling registration under the same national rules that apply in every other province.
Gauteng contributes more to South Africa's economy than any other province and is the country's undisputed economic hub — home to Johannesburg's financial and business sector and to Pretoria, the country's administrative capital. For students, that concentration of head offices, government departments and industry means more graduate opportunities, internships and workplace-based learning placements within easy reach than almost anywhere else in the country.
If you're relocating to Gauteng specifically to study, budget realistically for a higher cost of living than most other provinces — it's one of the trade-offs that comes with being the country's economic centre. Funding through NSFAS works the same way regardless of province, so it doesn't affect this decision either way.
