Cape Peninsula University of Technology, known as CPUT, is a public university of technology in the Western Cape and the only institution of its kind in the province. It was formed on 1 January 2005…
Universities of Technology in South Africa are the practical, career-focused branch of the public university system — a good fit if the diploma vs degree question matters to you, because most programmes here lean hands-on rather than purely academic. There are six dedicated Universities of Technology nationally: Tshwane
University of Technology (TUT) and Vaal University of Technology (VUT) in Gauteng, Durban University of Technology (DUT) and Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT) in KwaZulu-Natal, Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) in the Western Cape, and Central University of Technology (CUT) in the Free State.
What sets this route apart is that qualifications are built around a practical qualification you can actually use in a job. Courses in engineering, IT, business and applied science are common, and many include real workplace experience as part of the qualification itself — not just theory in a lecture hall. Like every public university, these six institutions are regulated by the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) and quality-assured by the Council on Higher Education (CHE), so a qualification from a University of Technology carries the same national standing as any other public university qualification.
Applying works the same way as for other public universities: you'll need your matric (NSC) results and an APS score that meets the specific programme's minimum, and some programmes also use National Benchmark Tests. Students who qualify financially can apply for NSFAS, which covers tuition, accommodation and living costs at public institutions, including all six Universities of Technology.
It's worth knowing upfront that these institutions sit in only four of South Africa's nine provinces — Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, the Western Cape and the Free State. If you live in one of the other five, that's not a dead end: your province's own page on this site explains the honest picture and points you to the nearest practical, career-focused alternative near you, whether that's a comprehensive university or a TVET college.
