Nursing Colleges

Nursing Colleges in South Africa train the people who keep our hospitals, clinics and communities cared for — one of the most needed, most respected career paths in the country. Whether you're a matric learner asking how to become a nurse in South Africa, or a parent helping a child choose a training route, this is where

that journey usually starts. Nursing stays in steady demand in every province, in both the public health system and private hospitals, which is part of why so many families see it as a stable, meaningful career choice.

Every nurse in South Africa, no matter where they trained, must be registered with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) before they can practise legally and use the title "nurse." This is the single most important thing to check before you enrol anywhere: is the college SANC accredited? A qualification from a college that isn't properly registered won't let you register as a nurse, however good the training looks on paper.

South Africa has nine public provincial nursing colleges — one in each province, run by that province's own Department of Health. These are usually the most affordable route into nursing, and because they're linked to the public health system, students often train alongside real hospital and clinic experience, learning on the job as well as in the classroom. Alongside the public colleges, there are also private and hospital-group nursing schools — names like Netcare Education, Life Healthcare and Mediclinic Learning Centres run their own SANC-accredited training. Both routes lead to the same SANC registration at the end, so the right choice often comes down to cost, location and the kind of learning environment that suits you best.

Entry requirements and application dates differ from college to college, so always confirm the details directly with the college you're interested in before applying. Many prospective students also search for nursing bursaries to help cover the cost of training — it's worth asking each college directly what funding support they offer, and applying as early as possible.

Whichever province you're in, the college near you and its private alternatives are only ever a search away. Browse the nursing college listings below to find the public and private options serving your part of the country.
