About the institution

The University of Fort Hare is a public university founded in 1916. It is governed under the Higher Education Act, 1997, with oversight from the Minister of Higher Education and Training. Its website displays the accreditation marks of the Council on Higher Education and the South African Qualifications Authority.

Teaching happens across three campuses in the Eastern Cape. Alice is the original and main campus, and it focuses on agriculture, science, education, social sciences and law. Bhisho focuses on public administration and presents itself as a route into government careers. East London hosts programmes in education, law, health sciences, management and commerce, and social sciences and humanities.

The university has six faculties: Science and Agriculture, Education, Health Sciences, Social Sciences and Humanities, Law, and Management and Commerce. Its qualifications start at diplomas and bachelor's degrees, including a four-year professional first bachelor's degree. They go up through bachelor honours degrees, postgraduate diplomas, master's degrees and doctoral degrees. An Extended Curriculum Programme supports students who need extra academic grounding.

The university reports around 13,000 enrolled undergraduate and postgraduate students. It also reports an undergraduate success rate of 85%, and says 91.8% of its students named it as their first choice.

Applications are made online through the university's iEnabler portal. To get in, you need a National Senior Certificate, or certified mid-year Grade 12 results while you wait for final certification. The university publishes an Admission Points Score (APS) calculator so applicants can check whether they're likely to qualify.
