UberGlam School of Fashion Design

Short Course & Specialist Provider

About the institution

UberGlam School of Fashion Design is a small fashion school in Fairland, Johannesburg, Gauteng. Its own website makes no statement about registration with the Department of Higher Education and Training, about accreditation, or about a formal qualification being awarded on completion. It is a practical sewing and design school for people who want skills rather than a degree, so learners who need a recognised qualification should ask the school directly before enrolling.

The school teaches in person only, from a single venue. Classes are small, with roughly eight to fifteen students, and most courses are built around one two-and-a-half-hour session a week. Learners can book extra sessions to finish sooner, or take several courses side by side. Sessions run on weekday daytimes, on one Monday evening and on Saturdays. Sewing machines and overlockers are provided for use in class, and students may bring their own. The site mentions no distance or online teaching.

The courses cover sewing and patternmaking for ladies', men's and children's clothing, stretch wear, swimwear, beachwear, lingerie, home accessories and handbags, as well as fashion illustration. Ladies' wear is split into beginner, intermediate and advanced levels, and a separate course is offered to teenagers aged 10 to 17. An Open Class has no syllabus, which suits learners who already sew and want to work on their own projects with help on hand.

Intakes happen at the start of each term, and a learner may join in any term. The minimum booking is one full term. Someone who wants to start part-way through a term is directed to the Open Class, space permitting. Registration can be done online, by sending in a signed registration and contract form with a copy of ID and proof of payment, or by booking a visit through the contact page. A place is only held once payment is confirmed.

No previous sewing experience is needed, and the site lists no formal academic entry requirement. Learners are accepted from the age of ten upwards, and foreign students are welcome.

Fees are published per course on the school's own website and in a downloadable price list. They are paid either monthly in advance, by the first of each month, or once off with a discount for paying in full. The student stays liable for the whole course fee whether or not they attend, and fees for missed classes are not refunded. The site names no bursary or funder that students can use.
