About the institution

Boston City Campus is a private higher education institution with its head office in Orchards, Johannesburg, and an extended head office in Stellenbosch. It was established in 1991 and is registered with the Department of Higher Education and Training as a private higher education institution under the Higher Education Act of 1997. The Higher Education Quality Committee of the Council on Higher Education accredits it to teach in distance mode, and its higher education qualifications are listed on the National Qualifications Framework. Outside South Africa, it holds institutional accreditation from the British Accreditation Council in the United Kingdom, while the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs in the United States accredits four of its qualifications and lists four more at candidate status.

Study happens online. Students learn from home or wherever they have a connection, and exams are written online through an invigilation app, either at home or at a support centre. For in-person help there is a network of 50 support centres across all nine provinces, in cities such as Johannesburg, Pretoria, Durban, Cape Town and Bloemfontein and in towns including Tzaneen, Komani, Secunda and Kimberley.

Qualifications run from higher certificates and diplomas through an advanced diploma and bachelor's degrees, among them a Bachelor of Laws and a Bachelor of Education in Foundation Phase Teaching, up to an honours degree, postgraduate diplomas, a postgraduate certificate in education and a Master of Business Administration. A large set of short learning programmes and digital credential badges sits alongside these. Fields include accounting and finance, business, marketing and administration, information and communication technology, law and human resources, education, hospitality, events and tourism, advertising and public relations, social science and health, and digital music.

There are two higher education intakes a year, one from January to February and one from June to July, and each programme sets its own closing date. Applying costs nothing and there is no points system. Applicants must be at least 17 and should preferably have completed Grade 10. Anyone over 45 may register for any programme, a degree included, and recognition of prior learning offers another way in.

NSFAS does not cover tuition at private higher education institutions. Fees can be paid upfront or over four, eight, ten or twelve months, and textbooks are included. Low-interest finance through Capitec can be repaid over up to 84 months, and bursaries are offered, including through the Boston Education Trust.
