The Academic Institute of Excellence, known as AIE, is a private higher education institution in South Africa. It is provisionally registered with the Department of Higher Education and Training as a private higher education institution, and its higher education programmes carry Council on Higher Education accreditation. AIE also holds accreditation from the Quality Council for Trades and Occupations for occupational and trade qualifications, as well as approvals from the Construction Education and Training Authority and MICT SETA. It describes itself as a family of education brands.
AIE teaches in three ways. Full-time hybrid learning lets students join live classes on campus, through a virtual classroom, or a mix of both. Full-time online learning runs entirely through the live virtual classroom, so students can study from anywhere, and part-time flexi online learning is aimed at working adults, with sessions after hours on some weekdays and on alternate Saturdays. Recorded classes can be downloaded through its learning platform and app. Its campuses are in Midrand, Greenside and Hatfield in Gauteng and in Cape Town in the Western Cape, and not every programme runs at every campus.
Programmes are grouped into schools covering engineering and science, art and design, architecture and the built environment, business and finance, artisans and trades, information technology and data science, music and sound production, draughting and technical design, and beauty and health science. Qualifications range from occupational certificates and higher certificates through diplomas and bachelor's degrees to honours degrees, alongside foundation programmes, short courses and professional certifications such as CIMA.
Each programme page lists its own intake dates by learning method and campus, and school-leavers can pre-enrol using their latest school results before final matric results are released. Entry requirements are set per programme. The engineering technology degrees, for example, ask for a National Senior Certificate with Mathematics and Physical Science, or accept N4 to N6 certificates in relevant subjects or the institution's foundation programme, and a recognition of prior learning policy offers a further route in.
AIE states that it is not funded by NSFAS. Fees are published per programme on its own site. Students can settle their fees upfront, apply for AIE's own payment terms, which require a steady income or a sponsor who applies on their behalf, or take an education loan from a bank or from one of the finance partners the institution lists.
