Private colleges in the Western Cape are second only to Gauteng in how many there are — of the 200 DHET-registered private institutions nationally (144 private higher education institutions plus 56 private colleges), 55 are registered here, giving Western Cape learners a genuinely wide range of choice.

More choice means the checks matter just as much as anywhere else. There are two separate DHET registers — the Register of Private Higher Education Institutions (for degrees, diplomas and higher certificates) and the Register of Private Colleges (for occupational, non-degree qualifications) — and a genuine college must be listed on whichever one matches what it's teaching. The Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) itself publishes warnings about "bogus colleges" that were never registered at all, so before you pay any registration fee, take the few minutes to check.

Being DHET registered as an institution still doesn't guarantee every qualification on offer is accredited — that's a separate check. Confirm the specific course is registered on the NQF via SAQA, and for degree-level study, that it's also accredited by the Council on Higher Education (CHE). So ask both "is this college legit?" and "is this qualification legit?" before you commit.
