Capsicum Culinary Studio is a private culinary and hospitality school that has been training chefs in South Africa since 2003. It forms part of the ADvTECH group, a listed private education company that also owns several other colleges and schools. Capsicum describes itself as a skills development provider and says it is registered with the Quality Council for Trades and Occupations (QCTO) and with the Culture, Arts, Tourism, Hospitality and Sport Sector Education and Training Authority (CATHSSETA). Because it offers occupational rather than higher education qualifications, its FAQ explains that it does not need to register with the Department of Higher Education and Training.
Teaching is hands-on and in person. Learners train in professional kitchens on campus and the school pairs its South African occupational qualifications with City & Guilds programmes from the United Kingdom, so that a graduate leaves with both a local and an international document. There are seven campuses: Boksburg, Rosebank, Ruimsig and Pretoria in Gauteng, Cape Town in the Western Cape, Durban in KwaZulu-Natal and Nelson Mandela Bay in the Eastern Cape. The Ruimsig campus has student accommodation on site and the Cape Town campus has residences close by; accommodation is charged separately from tuition.
The main full-time programmes run from NQF level 2 to NQF level 5. Foundational Cookery leads to the Occupational Certificate: Kitchen Hand at NQF 3, the Professional Chef programme leads to the Occupational Certificate: Cook at NQF 4, and the Advanced Professional Chef programme leads to the Occupational Certificate: Chef at NQF 5. There is also a Professional Patisserie route at NQF 5, an Assistant Baker skills programme at NQF 2, and three City & Guilds hospitality programmes in reception services, food and beverage service and an introduction to the hospitality industry. Several of these are also offered part-time, and a short part-time Rookie Chef course is open to anyone from Grade 8 upwards.
Intakes differ by programme. The chef and hospitality programmes start in February, patisserie starts in February and July, and Foundational Cookery, Assistant Baker and Rookie Chef start in September. Applications are made online and there is a R1 000 application fee. Entry requirements are set per programme rather than for the school as a whole: most full-time programmes ask for a minimum age of 18 and either Grade 9, Grade 10 or Grade 12 with Mathematical Literacy, and a matric certificate is not required for every course.
Fee schedules for 2026 are published per campus group as downloadable PDFs. Learners may pay in full or pay a deposit followed by instalments. NSFAS funding is not available because the school is private, but the site points applicants to Student Hero, a finance facilitation service, and notes that learnerships may sometimes be available.
