Universities in the Western Cape give the province four highly regarded public options, each with its own personality. The University of Cape Town is one of the most internationally ranked universities on the African continent, drawing students from across South Africa and abroad. Stellenbosch University, a short drive from
Cape Town, is another large, research-strong traditional university with a well-known agricultural and science reputation. University of the Western Cape is a comprehensive university with deep historical roots in providing academic access to communities who were shut out of higher education under apartheid, and remains highly respected for that legacy today. Cape Peninsula University of Technology rounds out the province as a dedicated University of Technology, offering practical, career-focused diplomas and degrees across engineering, business, IT and more.
That combination — two large traditional research universities, one comprehensive university with a strong access-focused history, and a dedicated University of Technology — means Western Cape learners have genuinely one of the widest and most varied local university choices in South Africa, all within reach of Cape Town and its surrounds.
Admission works the same way here as at any public university in the country: an APS score is calculated from your matric (NSC) results, and some Western Cape institutions, including the University of Cape Town, also use the National Benchmark Test (NBT) alongside your matric marks. Every course sets its own specific subject and mark requirements too, so always check the exact course rather than relying only on your general matric average. Applications typically open the year before you want to start — and given how competitive some Western Cape courses are, applying early really does matter.
NSFAS funding is available to qualifying students at all four of these universities, covering tuition and often accommodation and a living allowance, which is especially useful given Cape Town's relatively high cost of living for students relocating from elsewhere.
