Boland College

Boland College is a public Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) college serving the Boland region of the Western Cape, governed under Chapter 3 of the Continuing Education and Training Act of 2006, as amended. The college traces its current form to a 1998 restructuring in which the former Western Cape Education Department consolidated a group of provincial colleges into larger institutions, later renamed TVET colleges once responsibility moved to the national Department of Higher Education and Training. Boland College's own four founding campuses completed their amalgamation in 2001, with a fifth campus added shortly after. Its oldest site, in Stellenbosch, dates to 1918; the Strand, Paarl, Worcester and Caledon campuses were established or absorbed between the 1960s and 2002.

The college teaches in person from a head office and five campuses in the Boland region: Stellenbosch, Caledon, Paarl, Strand and Worcester. Programmes sit under six faculties covering business and administration, engineering, hospitality and tourism, IT and agriculture, office administration, and social and security-related fields. Qualifications include the National Certificate (Vocational), NQF levels 2 to 4, in subjects such as electrical infrastructure construction, engineering and related design, IT and computer science, robotics, primary agriculture, office administration and safety in society; Occupational Certificates at NQF levels 4 and 5, including automotive motor mechanic, bricklayer, diesel mechanic, electrician, welder, bookkeeper, office administrator, cook, chef, tourism information officer and early childhood development practitioner; and the National Diploma (Report 191), open to students who have completed an N6 certificate and the required period of workplace experience. A Pre-Vocational Learning Programme prepares learners who do not yet meet the entry requirements for a specific vocational pathway.

The college names Umalusi as its main quality-assurance body for National Certificate (Vocational) programmes and states it is accredited as a training provider by the ETDP SETA; it expects the Quality Council for Trades and Occupations to take over accrediting occupational programmes in future. Entry to National Certificate (Vocational) study requires Grade 9. Applicants apply through the college's own online system, completing a career-interest questionnaire before submitting a course choice and campus preference. Full-time programmes are supported through the National Student Financial Aid Scheme for those who qualify, and the college's fee terms require a deposit of between 25 and 50 percent of a programme's fees, with the remainder payable during the year under a signed agreement.
