Open Days

University and college open days in South Africa are your chance to walk onto a real campus before you commit years of your life (and often a lot of money) to it. You get to see lecture halls, residences and student life up close, and — more importantly — ask real people your real questions: what APS score you need, what

the matric requirements are for a specific course, how to apply, what fees look like, and whether NSFAS or another bursary could cover you. For a Grade 11 or Grade 12 learner still deciding what to study after matric, there is no substitute for standing on the ground and talking to a lecturer face to face.

Most public university open days run from February to May, well ahead of application deadlines (many universities close next-year applications around September, some later — always check the exact date for your target institution). That timing matters: go early enough in the year and you still have months to weigh up options, sort out documents, and apply calmly instead of in a last-minute panic. TVET colleges work differently — they often only announce open days one to three weeks in advance, usually on Facebook rather than on a formal website, so it pays to follow your local TVET college's page rather than waiting for an email. Private colleges and online schools, by contrast, tend to run open days and info sessions throughout the year, often monthly, which suits learners who only decide later or who are changing careers as adults.

Whichever type of institution you're considering, use the day well. Ask specifically about DHET registered status if it's a private college, and about SANC accreditation if it's a nursing programme — these confirm the qualification is real and recognised. Check that any course sits on the NQF, and don't be shy about asking how NSFAS or bursary funding works there. Bring a notebook; you'll hear more than you can remember.

One last practical note: dates, times and venues can change, so always confirm details on the organiser's own official page before you travel — and know that while most open days are free to attend, some ask you to register beforehand.
