Hospitality & Tourism Careers in South Africa
Hospitality and tourism careers in South Africa are for people who love making others feel welcome, enjoy a fast pace and like a job where no two days are the same. This category covers roles such as chefs and cooks, travel agents, tourist guides, hotel and guesthouse staff, restaurant and events teams, and the many people
behind the scenes who keep visitors fed, housed and on the move.
One big thing to know: most of these jobs have no compulsory professional council. You don't need to register with a council to work as a travel agent, for example — joining ASATA (the Association of Southern African Travel Advisors) is voluntary. The exception is tourist guides: under the Tourism Act 3 of 2014, a tourist guide must apply to a Provincial Registrar and show proof of competence before they can register.
There is more than one way in. You can study a diploma at a university of technology or private college — such as a Diploma in Tourism Management at NQF level 6 — or take an occupational certificate through a TVET college or accredited provider. The Occupational Certificate: Chef (NQF level 5) is one example; the SAQA record shows 30 December 2026 as the last date to enrol, so check what replaces it before you apply. Many tourism courses accept Mathematical Literacy, but always check the exact course, because requirements differ.
At school, the NSC subjects Tourism, Hospitality Studies and Consumer Studies give you a head start. They are not always required, but they show you what the work is really like.
Training money and learnerships in this field are handled by CATHSSETA — the Culture, Arts, Tourism, Hospitality and Sport Sector Education and Training Authority — which covers both the hospitality and travel and tourism sub-sectors.
If you're a people person, stay calm under pressure and don't mind weekends or early starts, hospitality and tourism could be a great fit. Browse the hospitality and tourism career profiles below for each role's study routes, subject requirements and what's genuinely known about pay.
