Your last paper is on 26 November. After that comes the long wait, and the question everyone in your house will keep asking: when do the results come out?
Here’s the honest answer. The 2026 matric results release date has not been confirmed yet. But past years give us a very clear pattern, and one province has already named its target date. This guide explains when to expect your results, how to get them, and what to do if they’re not what you hoped for.
Quick answer: The Department of Basic Education (DBE) has not yet confirmed when the 2026 matric results will be released. Going by the last two years, expect the national announcement around 12 or 13 January 2027, with results available to candidates the next day. Gauteng’s education department says it is targeting 12 January 2027.
When will the 2026 matric results be released?
Until the DBE announces the date, the best guide is what happened in the last two years.
Matric class | National announcement | Results available to candidates |
Class of 2024 | Monday, 13 January 2025 (evening) | Tuesday, 14 January 2025 (newspapers) |
Class of 2025 | Monday, 12 January 2026 (evening) | Tuesday, 13 January 2026 |

The pattern is the same each time. The Minister of Basic Education announces the national results on an evening in mid-January, and learners get their own results the following morning.
For the Class of 2026, the Gauteng Department of Education is targeting 12 January 2027, Sunday World reports. That’s a provincial target, not a confirmed national date, but it fits the pattern.
Get a results-day reminder: Send us “RESULTS” on WhatsApp and we’ll let you know as soon as the DBE confirms the date. Parents can also subscribe to the Think Education newsletter.
Good to know: Be careful of websites that state an “official” release date before the DBE has announced one. Until the department confirms it, any exact date is a prediction. Check the DBE’s results page for the real one.
Why does it take so long?
About seven weeks pass between the last paper and results day, and a lot happens in that time.
This year the DBE has set up 189 marking centres and recruited 51,104 markers to mark the scripts of the biggest matric class ever: a record 962,832 candidates.
After marking, Umalusi, the body that checks the quality of school exams, checks samples of the marking and standardises the results. In plain terms, standardising means checking that marks are fair compared with other years, for example if a paper turned out to be much harder than expected. Umalusi’s council then has to approve the results before they can be released.
How to get your matric results
For the Class of 2025, the DBE offered these options. Expect something similar in January 2027, but check the DBE’s announcement for the final details.
At your school or exam centre
The DBE urges candidates to collect their statement of results from the school or centre where they wrote. This is the official document, and your teachers are there to help you understand it and plan your next step.
Online
Last cycle, results went up on the DBE website from 6am on results day. You need your examination number to look them up.
Gauteng also runs its own Gauteng Matric Results Online System, where learners enter their exam number on a phone, tablet or computer.
In the newspapers
Results are also printed in accredited newspapers the day they are released. Since a court order in 2022, the DBE publishes them in a pseudonymised format, IOL reports. That means only exam numbers and outcomes appear, with no names or ID numbers.
Good to know: Your exam number is the key to every option except collecting at school. Write it down now and keep it somewhere safe, like a photo on your phone and a copy at home.
Need help on results day?
The DBE’s call centre is on 0800 202 933, or email callcentre@dbe.gov.za. Once you have your statement, our guide to matric results explained shows you what the pass levels and codes mean.
What about IEB and other exam boards?
If you write through the Independent Examinations Board (IEB) or another private exam board, your results come from that board, not the DBE. In January 2025, the IEB released its results earlier on the same day as the DBE’s national announcement. Ask your school which date applies to you.
Not happy with your results? Re-marks and re-checks
If you think a mark is wrong, you can apply for a re-mark (your script is marked again) or a re-check (the marks are added up and captured again). These were the rules and fees for the Class of 2025.
Service | Fee per subject (Class of 2025) |
Re-mark | R120 |
Re-check | R30 |
Viewing your script (only after a re-mark or re-check) | R230 |

Last cycle, the application window ran for two weeks, from 13 to 27 January 2026. You could apply at your school, at a district office or online through eServices. Re-mark results were released from 13 March 2026.
The window is short, so decide quickly. A re-mark can change your mark up or down.
Things to watch out for
- Check your personal details. Make sure your name and ID number are correct on your statement of results. Last cycle, corrections had to reach the DBE by 20 February.
- Queries have a deadline too. The DBE asks for result queries to be submitted within 30 days of release.
- Don’t wait for results to plan. Results come out in mid-January, and many universities and colleges have their own application deadlines. Check with the institutions you’re interested in now.
- Results day can be stressful. Plan to be with someone you trust when you open them, whatever you expect.
What if you didn’t pass, or want better marks?
One set of results doesn’t decide your future. There are several ways to improve your marks, at any age. If you’re worried about one paper in particular, read had a bad matric paper? Here’s what happens now.
- The May/June exam. The DBE replaced the old supplementary exam with a May/June exam where you can improve your results or finish outstanding subjects. In the last cycle, applications closed on 6 February, so move fast.
- Repeat Grade 12 full-time. This is possible if you’re under 21 and meet the DBE’s conditions.
- Study part-time. You can register at a Public Adult Education Centre. The DBE’s Second Chance Matric Programme offers after-hours and weekend classes at 41 centres.
- The Senior Certificate. If you’re over 21 or no longer at school, this is another route to a matric qualification.
- Go vocational. A TVET college offers practical, job-focused courses.
Your study options
While you wait, use the time to compare where you could study next year. Look at universities and TVET colleges, and consider distance learning if you want to work and study at the same time.

When did the 2025 matric results come out?

How can I check my matric results?
Collect your statement of results at your school or exam centre, which the DBE recommends. You can also check online with your exam number, and Gauteng runs its own online results system. Results are printed in accredited newspapers by exam number only, without names.
