Villioti Fashion Institute

Private Higher Education Institution

About the institution

Villioti Fashion Institute is a private fashion school in Johannesburg, Gauteng. It describes itself as a private higher education institution registered under the Higher Education Act of 1997, and it states that its Higher Certificate, Diploma, Bachelor of Fashion and Honours programmes are accredited by the Higher Education Quality Committee of the Council on Higher Education. The school was previously known as the Spero Villioti Elite Design Academy.

The campus is in Dunkeld West, opposite Hyde Park Corner, and has sewing studios, a computer lab running industry software such as Lectra and Adobe, a library and a canteen. Undergraduate programmes are full-time, with practical and theory courses running side by side. The Bachelor of Arts Honours in Fashion is the exception: it is offered online, and the fee schedule also refers to online short courses.

The qualification ladder runs from a Higher Certificate and a Diploma to a three-year Bachelor of Fashion, with four pathways that include commercial design and fashion business, and then an Honours degree. Separate short courses in garment construction, pattern making and fashion design run once a week in the evenings or on Saturdays, in levels, and end in a non-credit certificate of attendance. Non-degree programmes let people take individual credit-bearing courses drawn from the Diploma and the Bachelor, and an international short course is taught by visiting faculty from New York.

For the undergraduate programmes, applicants need a National Senior Certificate or equivalent with endorsement for that level of qualification, a minimum English mark and a minimum achievement rating in four recognised subjects. The Bachelor of Fashion also involves an entrance evaluation and an interview. Honours applicants need a relevant bachelor's degree or postgraduate diploma, and those with weaker final-year results are interviewed. No entry requirements are published for the short courses.
