TVET College

About the institution

Vhembe TVET College is a technical and vocational education and training college serving the Vhembe District in the far north of Limpopo. Its Central Office is at Sibasa, and the district's seat is Thohoyandou. The college's own printed prospectus carries the crest of the Department of Higher Education and Training. The college traces its roots to 1963 and has carried several names since then, including Finyazwanda College, the Technical College of Venda and Vhembe FET College, before becoming Vhembe TVET College.

Most teaching is in person, in classrooms and workshops on campus. The college also runs a Distance Learning Campus based at Makwarela. It offers NATED business studies at N4 to N6 level with online and in-person lecturer support. It is meant for Limpopo students who cannot attend classes regularly, who can study independently, or who work full time.

The college teaches from several campuses spread across the district, with a hospitality site at Makhado as well. Which programmes run depends on the campus, so learners should check the campus they plan to attend. Programmes sit in three fields: business studies, engineering studies and utility studies, which covers hospitality, tourism and clothing production. There are two main routes. The National Certificate (Vocational) runs from Level 2 to Level 4 over three years. NATED programmes run from N1 to N6, with N4 to N6 business studies taking 18 months and engineering studies 24 months. Learnerships and short skills programmes are also offered, mainly through the Thengwe campus. The college also has a centre that supports entrepreneurship and business incubation.

Entry requirements depend on the route. The National Certificate (Vocational) asks for Grade 9. NATED business studies asks for Grade 12 or a diploma pass. NATED engineering studies asks for Grade 12 or a bachelor or diploma pass with mathematics and physical sciences. The distance learning programmes ask for Grade 12 or a diploma pass. Learnerships ask for a pass beyond Grade 9.

New students apply online through the Vhembe MyAccess portal on the college website, and a compulsory learner profiler has to be completed before the application form. Intake periods and closing dates are not set out in the college's general pages and are best confirmed with the college. Fees and funding, including bursaries, are also not explained on those pages, so students should ask the college how payment and financial aid work.
