Maluti TVET College

TVET College

About the institution

Maluti TVET College is a public Technical and Vocational Education and Training college in the north-eastern Free State. It was set up under the Continuing Education and Training Act and falls under the Department of Higher Education and Training, and the college states that Umalusi and several Sector Education and Training Authorities accredit it. The college was established on 1 September 2002, when the provincial education department merged two former colleges of education, Bonamelo and Sefikeng, with four former technical colleges, Itemoheleng, Bethlehem, Kwetlisong and Lere La Tshepe.

Teaching happens in person across eight campuses. Most of them are in and around Phuthaditjhaba in QwaQwa, at the foot of the Maluti Mountains, with one campus in Bethlehem and one in Harrismith. The Central Office is in Phuthaditjhaba and a Corporate Office is in Bethlehem. Programme offerings differ from campus to campus, so the college asks applicants to confirm with a campus before applying.

The college offers three kinds of study. The National Certificate (Vocational) runs over three years at NQF Levels 2 to 4, in business fields such as marketing and office administration, engineering fields such as civil engineering and IT, and service fields such as hospitality and primary health. Report 191 (NATED) programmes cover business studies and utility studies from N4 to N6, and engineering studies from N1 to N6. Trade skills programmes built on registered unit standards, such as welding, bricklaying and motor mechanics, are offered at the Kwetlisong skills centre.

Applications are made online through the college's application portal, and a placement screening test must be completed first. NATED business and utility studies run in semesters, while engineering studies run in trimesters, so there are several intake points during the year. Entry to NC(V) and the lower engineering N-levels is listed from Grade 9 or ABET Level 4, while the higher N-levels are listed from Grade 12, N3 or NC(V) Level 4. Applicants need a certified copy of their ID or birth certificate and their latest results.

Tuition fees are supplied on request from the campuses and Central Office. The college itself does not award bursaries. South African students on NC(V) or NATED programmes who meet the financial need and academic criteria can apply to NSFAS, which administers the government TVET bursary and may also cover transport or accommodation for students who live far from campus. Payments are made into the bank, never to staff.
