Goldfields TVET College is a public technical and vocational education and training college, administered under the Continuing Education and Training Act (No. 16 of 2006) and falling under the Department of Higher Education and Training. Its National Certificate (Vocational) programmes are quality assured by Umalusi. The college is based in Welkom in the Free State, with its central office in Flamingo Park.
Teaching happens in person, on campuses set up as simulated workplaces. Welkom Campus, in the city centre, is home to business studies and has a training kitchen, restaurant, bar and hotel-style room for hospitality students, plus facilities for early childhood education students. Tosa Campus, on the outskirts of Thabong, is home to engineering studies and runs workshops for welding, plumbing, electrical work, carpentry, fitting and turning, and solar energy. Tosa also houses the college's Centre for Entrepreneurship, set up in 2017 to help technology-based small businesses start and grow. A Skills and Innovation Centre in Voorspoed runs hands-on skills training such as hairdressing. The college does not offer student residences, and it does not advertise distance or online study.
Qualifications include the NC(V) at NQF Levels 2 to 4, in fields such as marketing, finance and accounting, office administration, tourism, hospitality, information technology, electrical infrastructure, civil engineering and drawing office practice. The NC(V) Level 4 certificate is treated as equivalent to matric. The college also offers NATED (Report 191) N-programmes in engineering and business, occupational certificates for roles such as electrician, plumber, welder, chef, bookkeeper and early childhood development practitioner, and learnerships and apprenticeships, with apprentices finishing at an accredited trade test centre.
Most programmes need Grade 9 or an equivalent, and applicants must be at least 16. N4 programmes need Grade 12 or an equivalent. Applicants write an entrance test in literacy and numeracy and may be interviewed. Applications are made online through the college's student portal, after a career guidance questionnaire, with certified copies of an ID and latest results; foreign nationals also need a study permit and a SAQA evaluation. Each NC(V) level is a full year of study, and the college does not publish set intake dates.
Fees are set per programme and published on the college's own site. NC(V) and Report 191 programmes are state funded, while occupational programmes are funded through SETAs. Most students are funded by NSFAS, and the college's financial aid office helps students apply for NSFAS and other bursaries.
