iQ Academy

iQ Academy is a private higher education institution registered with the Department of Higher Education and Training under the Higher Education Act, 1997, holding Registration Certificate No. 2012/HE07/001. Its Higher Certificate programmes are registered with the South African Qualifications Authority and accredited by the Higher Education Quality Committee and the Council on Higher Education, while its shorter, non-credit-bearing courses sit outside this formal accreditation as institutional learning programmes. The institution teaches exclusively online, with no printed study material sent to students; learners work through a Virtual Campus portal on a smartphone, PC, laptop or tablet, joining live sessions run on Microsoft Teams alongside self-directed reading and multimedia activities, and the site advises that around 1GB of data a month is enough to study. Its head office is in Vincent, East London, in the Eastern Cape, and it has no other listed campuses, consistent with a distance-learning model that serves students across South Africa from one base.

The institution offers two shelves of programme. Short courses run three to six months and cover practical, job-focused subjects such as business management, human resources, marketing, information technology, engineering fundamentals, safety and facilities management, bookkeeping, hospitality, public management, early childhood development and beauty therapy. Higher Certificates are one- to two-year NQF Level 5 qualifications, currently offered in Business Management, Human Resources Management, Public Administration and Management, and Local Governance. Entry to a Higher Certificate normally requires a National Senior Certificate, Senior Certificate or National Certificate (Vocational) Level 4 with at least 30 percent in the language of teaching and learning, applicants must be at least 18, and the institution also considers mature applicants through recognition of prior learning or relevant work experience. Enrolment is continuous rather than tied to fixed intake dates, with the site inviting prospective students to enrol at any time of year.

On cost, iQ Academy advertises interest-free monthly payment plans with no upfront deposit or registration fee: short courses from R440 a month and Higher Certificates from R899 a month, paid through its own online payment portal. The institution began, by its own account, as a largely correspondence college that posted printed course books to students, and has since moved to a fully online model; it describes itself today as one of the market leaders in South African distance education. It was founded in 2006 and operates under the registered company iQ Academy (Pty) Ltd.
