Elizabeth Galloway Academy of Fashion

Private Higher Education Institution

About the institution

Elizabeth Galloway Academy of Fashion is a private higher education institution in Stellenbosch, in the Western Cape, that teaches fashion design. It was founded in 1996 and is registered with the Department of Higher Education and Training under the Higher Education Act of 1997. The institution also states that it is accredited by the Council on Higher Education, that its diploma-level programmes are quality assured by the Higher Education Quality Committee, and that its full-time programmes are registered with the South African Qualifications Authority.

Teaching happens in person on a single campus in Techno Park. No online or distance option appears anywhere on the site. The Diploma in Fashion Design and the Bachelor of Arts in Fashion Design are three-year, full-time programmes that run on weekdays. The Advanced Diploma in Fashion takes one year full-time, with compulsory contact sessions on campus and a workplace placement in a chosen specialisation, or two years part-time for people already working in the fashion industry. A separate part-time design course meets on Saturdays and is aimed at complete beginners; it is not an accredited qualification and ends with a certificate of completion. A mentorship programme for fashion entrepreneurs is also listed.

Entry to the Diploma and the BA needs a National Senior Certificate, a National Certificate (Vocational) at level 4 or a recognised equivalent, and applicants must be older than 18 at registration. The BA also asks for a pass in English. Applicants aged 23 and older who lack a school-leaving qualification can be considered on workplace experience, an entrance assessment and an interview. Supporting documents include certified results, two written references and a certified ID, and the BA adds a motivation essay. The Advanced Diploma asks for a relevant design-related qualification at NQF level 6, with recognition of prior learning for applicants who do not hold one.

Applications go through an online form in two steps, and both must be completed before an application is processed. No closing date is published. An application fee is payable by bank transfer, and proof of payment is uploaded with the documents.

Tuition fees are published per programme on the institution's own site. For paying, the institution runs a fee assistance scheme for first-year Diploma applicants, and its funding page points students to education loans from Capitec and Nedbank, to the alternative funder Manati and to the comparison platform Student Hero. NSFAS is not mentioned.
