Berea Technical College (BTC) is a private college on Anton Lembede Street in central Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, part of the Berea Group of Colleges, an umbrella that also includes Berea College of Technology and Berea Matric School. On its own page, the college describes itself as the only fully accredited private college in Durban offering qualifications designed and issued by the Department of Higher Education and Training. The Berea Group of Colleges home page also displays the logos of the Quality Council for Trades and Occupations and the South African Qualifications Authority alongside the DHET logo, under the heading "accredited & endorsed by these leading regulators", and states that the group has held ISO 9001 quality-management certification, audited by SGS, since 2005. A counter on the same home page puts the group at roughly 27 years in education, and Berea Technical College's own page separately says it is celebrating 26 years as one of Durban's pioneer private colleges, placing its founding at approximately 1999 or 2000.
Programmes sit under faculties covering engineering, information technology, management and commerce, hospitality and tourism, education and legal studies, media and creative studies, and transport and logistics, taught full-time, part-time and by distance learning. Qualification levels range from artisan trade certificates and National N Diplomas through Occupational Certificates, Higher Certificates, National Diplomas and Diplomas, up to Bachelor's degrees in commerce and information technology and a Postgraduate Certificate in Education. Subjects include civil, mechanical and electrical engineering, computing and software-related occupations, accounting, human resources, marketing, supply chain and logistics, hospitality and travel and tourism, public relations, paralegal studies and policing, and the engineering programmes build in a project-management component. The college promotes a "100% Graduate Employment" claim of its own and lists work-integrated learning, internships and campus counselling among its student support services.
Entry requirements and course fees are not published on the college's site; a downloadable prospectus is offered instead. Applications run through an online registration portal, and the college advertises more than one intake a year, including a mid-year enrolment window, though no opening or closing date is published. As a private institution, Berea Technical College does not accept NSFAS funding, so students must cover their own fees or arrange other financing. The campus is close to transport links and within walking distance of student accommodation and food and retail options.
