Open days & events in Gauteng

Education events in Gauteng happen more often, and in more variety, than anywhere else in South Africa — this is the country's most crowded education province, with the biggest concentration of universities, colleges and private institutions all within a few hours' drive (or a taxi ride) of each other. Whether you're in Johannesburg

, Pretoria, Soweto, Vanderbijlpark or anywhere across Ekurhuleni, there's usually something running nearby: a campus open day, a career expo, a bursary info session or a free webinar.

On the university side, Gauteng is home to Wits, the University of Pretoria, the University of Johannesburg, UNISA, Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University, and two universities of technology — Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) and Vaal University of Technology (VUT). Each runs its own open days and info sessions, usually announced on its own website and social media pages, so it's worth following the ones you're interested in directly. UNISA, as a national distance-learning university based here but serving students all over the country, tends to run ad-hoc regional information sessions rather than a fixed open-day calendar.

Below university level, Gauteng's eight TVET colleges — including Central Johannesburg, Tshwane North, Tshwane South and Sedibeng — regularly hold their own open days, though these are often only announced one to three weeks in advance, usually on Facebook rather than a formal website. The Gauteng College of Nursing trains future nurses at a SANC-accredited institution, and this province also has by far the most DHET-registered private colleges in the country — around 98 — so private-institution open days and info sessions run here almost continuously through the year.

Gauteng is also where EduXplore runs one of its education expos, in Pretoria, bringing multiple institutions together under one roof so undecided learners can compare options quickly. Whatever event you attend, go in with real questions — your APS score, your matric requirements, how to apply, what it costs, and whether NSFAS or another bursary could help. Most events are free, though some ask you to register beforehand, and organisers can change a date or venue at short notice, so always confirm details on the official page before you travel.
