Social Worker

Career summary
A social worker helps people whose lives have become hard to manage. You might protect a child from abuse, help a family with addiction, support someone with a mental illness, or find a foster home for a child who needs one. Most of your work is listening, assessing what is really going on, and making a plan with the people involved.
In South Africa, many social workers work for government, such as the Department of Social Development, and some work in public hospitals and clinics. Others work for welfare organisations, children's homes, shelters, schools, courts and companies. Much of the job happens outside the office, on home visits, in clinics and sometimes in court.
To work as a social worker you will normally need a four-year Bachelor of Social Work degree and you must register with the South African Council for Social Service Professions (SACSSP). You register as a student from your second year of study, or earlier if you do fieldwork in your first year. The work is emotionally demanding, but it can change the direction of a child's whole life.
A Day in the Life
Many social workers in South Africa work for government, helping children and families in trouble. This is an example day for a child protection social worker. No two days are the same, and one emergency can change everything.
07:45
Check the cases — You start at the office. You check messages, plan your home visits and find a colleague to go with you. Some teams travel in pairs to areas that are not safe.
09:00
Home visits — You drive to a family's home to see how a child in foster care is doing. You talk to the child, the carers and sometimes the school. Many government posts ask for a driver's licence.
11:30
Counselling session — Back at the office or clinic, you meet a parent struggling with drug use. You listen, ask careful questions and agree on small steps. Later you may run a group session for several families.
13:30
An urgent report — A call comes in about a child who may be in danger. The department must act on reports of abuse or neglect. You may visit straight away, with police help if needed.
15:00
Court and paperwork — If a child has to be moved, the placement goes through the children's court. You write a clear report about what you saw and why you decided what you did. Good notes protect the child and you.
16:30
Supervision — You meet your supervisor to talk through hard cases. This helps you make good decisions and cope with the stress. Some days, an emergency means you only get home late.
