Occupational Therapist

Career summary
An occupational therapist, or OT, helps people do the everyday tasks that fill their lives. That might be a child who struggles to hold a pencil, an adult relearning how to dress after a stroke, or someone with a mental illness getting back to work. OTs look at what stops a person and find a way around it.
OTs work in public and private hospitals, clinics, special needs schools, psychiatric hospitals, rehabilitation centres and private practices. Some assess injuries for insurance companies or courts. The work changes a lot from one setting to the next, so you can follow the area you enjoy most, such as children, mental health or hand injuries.
To become an OT in South Africa you study a four-year degree, then do one paid year of community service in a public health facility, registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa. After that you register as an Occupational Therapist and can work anywhere, including in your own practice. Every OT must stay registered to keep working.
A Day in the Life
This is a typical day for an OT in a public hospital, perhaps during community service. Every setting is different, and a school or private practice OT has a very different day.
07:30
Plan the day — Check new referrals from doctors and nurses, plan which patients to see first and pack the equipment you will need, such as splinting material or a wheelchair to check.
08:00
Ward patients — Visit patients on the wards who have had a stroke, an injury or an operation. You check how well they can wash, dress and eat, and start practising these tasks with them.
10:00
Children in outpatients — See children who struggle at school. You work on hand skills, how they see and make sense of shapes and letters, and how they hold a pencil, often through play.
11:30
Group session — Run a group, for example a mental health group where patients practise routines, planning and social skills through practical activities.
13:00
Clinic outreach or home visit — Drive out to a clinic or a patient's home. In rural areas these clinics can be hours away from the hospital. You check whether the home needs changes, like a rail or a ramp.
15:00
Devices and paperwork — Hand out assistive devices such as walking aids or adapted cutlery, then write up your patient notes and the statistics the department needs.
