Most people only think about North West when they're driving through it on the way to Sun City. Fair enough. But if you're trying to decide where to live while you study, the province deserves a proper look.
Here's the short version: if you study in North West, you're signing up for small-town student life, wide-open bush on your doorstep, mining and farming industries to aim for, and Joburg close enough for a weekend but far enough that it doesn't swallow your budget.
It's not for everyone (read the not-so-great bits below), but for a lot of people it's a quietly smart choice.
1. Gauteng is next door, without the Gauteng chaos
North West sits right on Gauteng's western edge. Potchefstroom is about 120 km from Johannesburg, and it's under two hours' drive from OR Tambo or Lanseria airport outside rush hour. Hartbeespoort is so close to Pretoria that most people think it's in Gauteng.
So you can get to a concert, an interview or a flight home without living in the traffic.
2. Student life in Potchefstroom has its own rhythm
Potchefstroom, or just "Potch", is a proper student town, and a lot of daily life bends around the academic calendar.
The town sits on the Mooi River ("pretty river" in Afrikaans) and has Oak Avenue, a lane of oak trees planted back in 1910 that runs for nearly 7 km. A lot of what you need is within a short walk or cycle, which matters when you don't have a car.
History pops up everywhere too. The Old Fort was besieged for 95 days during the South African War, and the 1909 Town Hall with its domed clock tower is still standing.
3. Potch takes sport very seriously
If you play or watch sport, this one's for you. The province calls Potchefstroom its "Home of Sport", and the town backs that up:
- Olën Park, home ground of the Leopards rugby team
- Senwes Park, where the North-West Dragons play cricket
- Plenty of school and club rugby, cricket and athletics, so there's usually a match on somewhere on a Saturday
Even if you're not sporty, grab a boerie roll and go watch a game at least once.
4. Mahikeng: the capital, with serious history
Mahikeng is the provincial capital, and the provincial legislature meets next door in Mmabatho. It's about 260 km west of Johannesburg, close to the Botswana border, and it moves at a slower pace than Potch.
History fans will like it here. The Siege of Mafeking lasted 217 days, from October 1899 to May 1900, and Mmabatho was once the capital of the former Bophuthatswana homeland.
Want to go even further back? The famous Taung Child fossil was found in Taung, in this province, in 1924. In 1925 it became the first fossil ever named Australopithecus africanus, an early human relative.
5. Rustenburg is the province's biggest city
If small-town life sounds too small, Rustenburg is the province's most populous city. It's known as a world-leading platinum city, so there's real money and industry around it.
The Royal Bafokeng Stadium near Phokeng hosted matches at the 2010 FIFA World Cup. England even used Rustenburg as their base camp. It's also the gateway to Pilanesberg, which brings us to the best bit.
6. Pilanesberg and Sun City sort out your weekends
This is where North West really shows off. Pilanesberg National Park covers about 580 km² inside the crater of a long-extinct volcano, and it has the Big Five: lion, leopard, rhino, elephant and buffalo. Self-drive game viewing with friends who've pooled petrol money is a classic student day out.
Sun City is right next door if you fancy a pool day.
Further north-west there's Madikwe Game Reserve, and closer to Gauteng there's the Magaliesberg, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 2015. Think hikes, kloofs and lekker braais on long weekends.
7. Hartbeespoort Dam is closer than you'd think
Hartbeespoort, or "Harties", is in North West, in the Madibeng municipality. The dam sits between the Magaliesberg and the Witwatersberg ranges. There are yacht and boat clubs on the water, and the Hartbeespoort Aerial Cableway takes you up the Magaliesberg for a view that's worth the queue.
From Potch, the Vredefort Dome is an easy outing too. It's a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the oldest known meteorite impact structure on Earth, technically just over the border in the Free State, near Parys.
8. Jobs and internships in the "Platinum Province"
North West is known as the Platinum Province. Platinum is mined around Rustenburg and Brits, and the province also produces chrome, gold and granite. On the farming side, it's a major producer of white maize and has big cattle herds, especially around Vryburg.
So if you're thinking about mining, engineering, geology, environmental science, agriculture, animal health, logistics or finance, there's real industry here to aim for. Vacation work, learnerships or in-service training at a mine or agribusiness looks great on a CV. Tourism around Sun City and Pilanesberg is another place to look for part-time work.
9. Highveld weather and a Setswana-speaking home
The climate is classic Highveld. Summers are warm to hot, roughly 17 to 31 °C, with most of the rain falling between October and April, often as late-afternoon thunderstorms. Winter nights get cold, dropping to around 3 °C, so pack a proper duvet and a heater.
Setswana is the main home language for most people in the province, with Afrikaans and isiXhosa also spoken. Picking up a few Setswana greetings goes a long way at the taxi rank and the spaza shop.
The not-so-great bits
Here's the real talk.
- Fewer options than the big provinces. North West has fewer places to study than Gauteng or the Western Cape. Check that the exact course you want is offered here before you fall in love with the town.
- You'll want transport. There's no metro rail or Gautrain here. Minibus taxis are what most people rely on, and long-distance buses link Potch to Joburg's Park City Transit Centre. Trips to Pilanesberg or Harties are much easier if someone has a car.
- Small towns are small. Potch and Mahikeng aren't Joburg. Fewer clubs, fewer concerts and fewer big-brand internships. Some people love that. Some get restless by second year.
- Distance. Mahikeng is far from most other cities, so going home for a weekend can be a long, pricey trip if you're not from the area.
- Cost of living is usually gentler than in the big metros, but student rent in Potch can still climb, especially close to the start of the year. Check current listings before you commit.
Your study options in North West
You've got more routes than you might think. North West has universities, TVET colleges for practical, job-ready qualifications, private colleges and nursing colleges. There are also short courses and learnerships, often linked to mining and farming. And with distance learning, you can study online from anywhere in the province. If you're looking at a private college, make sure it's registered with the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET). You can check this on our listings. See everything in one place on the North West province page.
