Thinking of skipping matric and doing a GED instead? Lots of people ask this. Some are tired of school. Some are home-schooled. Some are adults who never finished.
Short answer: in South Africa, matric is the safer choice for most people. A GED can work, but it closes some doors, especially at public universities.
Let's break it down, nice and simple.
What is matric?
"Matric" is the everyday name for the National Senior Certificate (NSC). It's the certificate you get when you pass Grade 12 in South Africa.
- It sits at NQF Level 4 (that's the level for finishing school).
- You usually do 7 subjects, over Grade 10, 11 and 12.
- Your marks come from exams plus schoolwork done during the year.
- Universities, colleges and employers all know it.
When you pass, you get one of four pass levels. The higher the level, the more study doors open:
- Bachelor's pass: can apply for a degree.
- Diploma pass: can apply for a diploma.
- Higher Certificate pass: can apply for a higher certificate.
- NSC pass: you've passed, but with the lowest entry level.

What is a GED?
GED stands for General Educational Development. It's an American "high school equivalency" test. It started in the USA, but you can write it in South Africa.
Here's how it works:
- There are 4 tests: Maths (Mathematical Reasoning), Science, Social Studies, and Reasoning Through Language Arts (English).
- You can start from age 17.
- There's no set syllabus and no school years to sit through. You study, then book each test when you feel ready.
- You need at least 145 points on each test to pass.
- It's only offered in English.
- You pay per test, in US dollars, plus the cost of any prep classes.
Sounds quick and easy, right? It is quicker. But speed isn't the only thing that matters. 👇
Is the GED recognised in South Africa?
Yes, but only in some ways. This is the part that trips people up.
✅ What the GED CAN do:
- SAQA (the South African Qualifications Authority) can evaluate your GED. It has found the NSC (NQF Level 4) to be its closest comparable qualification.
- That SAQA certificate can help when you apply for jobs.
- Some private colleges accept the GED for many of their courses, including some degrees, if your GED scores are high enough.
- Many overseas and online universities accept it.
❌ What the GED usually CAN'T do:
- If you got your GED in South Africa after 2019, you can't apply directly for university exemption from Universities South Africa (USAf). Exemption is the "green light" you need to study a degree here if your school qualification isn't the NSC.
- Instead, the college or university that wants to admit you has to apply for it on your behalf. And each one decides if it wants to do that.
- It's not a good fit for courses with strict entry rules, like medicine.
🧠 Simple way to remember it: matric is a key that fits most doors in South Africa. A GED is a key that fits some doors, and for some of them you need someone on the inside to open it for you.
Matric vs GED: side-by-side

Jobs in SA | ✅ Widely known | ⚠️ Better with a SAQA evaluation |
Studying overseas | ✅ Often accepted | ✅ Often accepted, especially in the USA |
Cost | Free at public schools (no-fee schools) or school fees | Paid per test in US dollars + prep |
Already left school? Know about the "adult matric" 💡
Many people choose the GED because they think matric is only for teenagers. It isn't.
If you're 21 or older, you can write the Senior Certificate (amended). People often call it "adult matric". It's run by the Department of Basic Education.
- You need a Grade 9 report (or old Standard 7), a GETC, or an incomplete matric.
- You write 6 subjects.
- There's no schoolwork mark. Your exam mark is 100% of your result.
- Exams are written in May/June each year.
- It can qualify you for a degree, diploma or higher certificate, just like the NSC.
👉 For adults who want a South African university, this is often a better route than the GED.
How to choose: 5 quick questions
Ask yourself these, in order:
- Do I want to study at a public university in South Africa? → Yes? Go for matric (or adult matric if you're 21+). It's the clearest path.
- Do I already know what I want to study? → Check that course's entry rules first. Some need Maths (not Maths Literacy) or Physical Sciences at a certain level. A GED won't show those subjects the same way.
- Am I planning to study or live overseas, especially in the USA? → A GED could make sense. Check each university's rules directly.
- Do I just need a school-leaving certificate for work? → Either can work. Matric is better known by SA employers. If you do the GED, get the SAQA evaluation.
- Am I 21 or older and never finished school? → Look at adult matric first. Then compare.

Red flags to watch out for 🚩
- ❌ "GED = matric, guaranteed!" Not true for every door in South Africa. Ask for proof of what the GED will get you into.
- ❌ "We'll get you into any university with a GED." Universities decide this, not prep companies.
- ✅ Before you pay anything, ask the college you want to study at: "Do you accept a GED for this exact course? Will you apply for exemption for me?" Get the answer in writing.
What about money?
- Public school matric can be free at no-fee schools.
- The GED costs money per test, paid in US dollars, so the rand price changes with the exchange rate.
- Planning to study after school? Check if you can get NSFAS or a bursary on our funding page. Ask the funder if they accept your school-leaving certificate before you apply.
Frequently asked questions
Is a GED the same as matric in South Africa?
No. SAQA finds the matric (NSC) to be the GED's closest match, but they're not the same thing. The GED doesn't give you a matric pass level like a Bachelor's pass.
Can I go to university in South Africa with a GED?
Sometimes. Some private colleges accept it. For a degree, you may need university exemption, and if you got your GED in South Africa after 2019, the institution admitting you has to apply for it, not you.
How long does a GED take?
There's no fixed time. You write 4 tests when you're ready. Some people finish in a few months.
How old do you need to be to write the GED?
17 or older.
Can adults still get matric?
Yes. If you're 21 or older, you can write the Senior Certificate (amended), also called adult matric. It can qualify you for higher education.
Is the GED recognised for jobs in South Africa?
It can be. Get your GED evaluated by SAQA so employers can see where it fits on the NQF.
Which is better: matric or GED?
For most people who want to study in South Africa, matric. The GED suits people heading overseas, or those who've checked that their chosen college accepts it.
